Moshi Moshi
It’s boba-licious.
If you’re in need of a pick-me-up, pay a visit to Moshi Moshi. ‘Moshi moshi’ is a colloquial way to say ‘hello’ in Japanese. Greensboro said moshi moshi to the boba cafe in March 2020, and it’s a haven for bubble tea enthusiasts. Their space is super kawaii — the floral wall displays, neon letters, and boba-themed wall art create a carefree oasis. Whether you’re a bubble tea newbie or boba connoisseur, Moshi Moshi is a wonderful place to be.
What is bubble tea? To be honest, I didn’t know what bubble tea was until my junior year of college. I had bubble tea for the first time in New York City’s Koreatown. Bubble tea, also known as bubble milk tea, boba, or pearl milk tea, originated in Taiwan in the early 1980s. The ‘bubbles’ in the tea are tapioca pearls (or boba), made from tapioca starch. Boba pearls add a gelatinous texture to the smooth drink. Standard tapioca pearls are black sugar flavored, but fruit-based varieties are available as well. Moshi Moshi’s menu is a beverage wonderland. They offer fruit tea slushies; milk tea; fusion fruit tea; green tea yogurt (sparkling green tea with yogurt); and coconut water refreshers (coconut water with fruit). Signature drinks include selections such as Thai tea Oreo (Oreo, milk cap and grass jelly) and Mangonada (mango puree, charnoy, and Tajin tamarind candy). If you’re unsure of what to order, don’t hesitate to ask the friendly and knowledgeable staff. They are happy to answer any questions you have.
Moshi Moshi also offers desserts such as rolled ice cream, bingsu, and bubble waffles. Rolled ice cream is made by thinly spreading ice cream on a super cold metal surface, then it is artfully scraped up into a tight spiral. Bingsu is an icy Korean treat comprised of shaved ice and sweet toppings, such as condensed milk, chopped fruit and red beans. The bubble waffle bowls are a delightful take on traditional waffle bowls. The waffles are served warm and beautifully complement the chilly rolled ice cream and assorted toppings.
The cafe is currently operating with social distancing regulations in place: staff members wear masks and select indoor tables are closed to enforce space between guests. There’s ample parking space behind the building and across the street. It’s the perfect place to catch up with a friend or read a book while sipping your drink of choice. No matter the weather, Moshi Moshi is always a good idea.
